The Prez Sez: Notes from the MMK May Meeting

Some of you know that I lost a beloved member of my family four weeks ago. My aunt, who was my best friend and my other mother, died suddenly from a tragic accident. It shook up my world and I have been mourning her loss ever since. We had a standing dinner date for the first Wednesday of the month (coincided nicely with guild meetings) among the many activities we shared. I still reach for the phone to call and tell her about something I have discovered only to remember that she won’t answer. Every day is better but I know it will take awhile before the grieving lessens. I do hope you will bear with me during this sad time of my life. Special thanks to Jeanne for her kindness at the April meeting. I was there for the business portion but left before the program. I do have notes and hope that the membership will fill in the blanks at the June meeting.

Our May meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Jeanne Bohlen, Christine Estacion, Karen Gardner, Kathy Graziani, Donna Jaffe, Lauri Katz, Ruth Kelly, Marilyn Rifkin, Lorena Scott, Kathleen Walton and our favorite cross stitcher, Emily Bennett.

Old Business:

Kathleen Walton brought in the past copies of the “Stranded” newsletter. The membership agreed that while it was a nice publication, it was rarely used and voted to let the subscription lapse.

New Business

Not really new business, I mentioned to Marilyn that I saw her letter in the Travel section of the Washington Post about travel insurance. We had a short, but lively discussion about that.
Marilyn asked for an updated copy of the club roster. I will bring copies to the May meeting.

Our skill of the month was to be the three needle bind off. However, we neglected to choose someone to demonstrate so tabled it for the June meeting. Lorena volunteered to be our demonstrator.

I ended the meeting and turned it over to Ruth Kelly for her program on making a yarn necklace.

I wasn’t present for the Show and Share, but Kay’s idea about writing the projects down has served us well and I do have a list.

Show and Share details:

Jeanne Bohlen: is participating in the Magic with Dyeing and Plying workshop

Kathleen Walton: is working on an irregular rib sweater

Christine Estacion: is continuing work on her christening gown and her new summer top (a Sandra pattern)

Donna Jaffe: is working on another summer sweater with cables and bobbles and socks with a fancy rib pattern

Lauri Katz: didn’t write anything down so I can’t tell you what she shared

Ruth Kelly: is working on a rust colored silk and wool sweater

Marilyn Riffkin: is working on a new white fringed shawl and completed the multicolored fringed shawl

Karen Gardner: is working on a sweater, two baby blankets and a scarf

Kathy Graziani: is working on a mitered squares vest and her Einstein coat

Lorena Scott: is working on a lace washcloth, a beaded cell phone holder and started a top down shell

Emily Bennett: is working on a calla flower cross stitch

Program: I don’t know if there is a formal program planned but I am sure we will all want to discuss our Sheep and Wool Festival goodies

Skill: Three needle bind off

I hope everyone had a nice Mother’s Day and will have a relaxing Memorial Day weekend.

See you at the next meeting: Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.
