Our Program for April is Lace Bookmarks:

Alana has agreed to show all the ins and outs of knitted lace bookmarks. You may remember seeing one at the Holiday Exchange (in fact it changed hands a few times!) or our regular meeting a couple of months ago when she was showing two that she had knit from that ever so wonderful fiber Qiviut.

Here's our supply list and a message from Alana.

Supplies needed for lace bookmarks:
#2 needles
approx 30 yds laceweight yarn. (this is more than enough for one bookmark but I over estimate, nothing like getting part way through and running out!) If you don't have any yarn, don't run out and buy some, unless you want an excuse to get to the yarn store. :-) I have some leftover yarn from my shawls that I'll be bringing with me for anyone who wants/needs it. And to answer the question about where I got the "weightless" yarn to make the bookmarks I brought to show and share in February.... That was some laceweight qiviut I got for Christmas in a bookmark kit. I don't have any of that left, darn it!

**I would also like to send a reminder to those of us that have promised knit swatches to Lauri Katz. I'm sure she would like to get this project into it's next stage.

CHARITY DAY KNITTING AND CROCHETING FOR THE CHILDREN PARTY
By Claire Wudowsky

Please join Capital Crocheters & Knitters, Inc. (CCK) at the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington, DC for a Charity Day Knitting and Crocheting for the Children Party on Sunday, April 18, 2004, from 12:30 - 4:30. We're going to make red, white and blue or brightly colored blankets, hats, scarves, stuffed animals and memory pillows for the children served by The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Inc. (TAPS) and we're making darkly colored socks, sweaters and blankets for the children served by Afghans for Afghans. We are looking for 7" by 9" or 8" by 8" squares for the blankets and 8" to 12" solid (no holes or eyelets) squares for the memory pillows. So, if you have any extra squares just hanging around the house, please bring them along!

TAPS is a national non-profit organization made up of, and providing services to, all those who have lost a loved one while serving in the Armed Forces. For more information see TAPS.

Afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that sends hand-knit and crocheted blankets and garments to the beleaguered people of Afghanistan.

Grab your crochet or knitting supplies and join us on the third floor balcony at the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington, DC. The Old Post Office Pavilion is located at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW and is easily accessible from the Metrorail from the Blue/Orange line at the Federal Triangle station or from the Red/Blue/Orange line at the Metro Center station. We are very excited to hold this charity event at this wonderful location which includes shops, a food court, and one of the best views of the city from it's clock tower vista. Also - as an added plus, there will be a jazz combo on the food court level - which we will be able to enjoy.

CCK will provide patterns and supplies for those who need them. Volunteers will be on hand to help you get started or to help get you back on track with a charity project.

Of course, we can make this a little more interesting. Some lucky attendees will win prizes - everyone who attends is eligible!

If you have any questions, call 202-986-1888 or contact us by email at knitoutcrochet@yahoo.com

Stash Buster Alert:
If your stash is overflowing with smooth worsted weight yarn - we can help with this dilemma! Donate that spare yarn to Capital Crocheters & Knitters, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting the education and art of knitting and crocheting.
