September Meeting Notes:

Our October program (on Wednesday, October 1st) will be: Knitting in the Round with 2 Circular Needles. Our own very talented knitter (and multiple prize-winner at the Montgomery County Fair), Donna Jaffe, will lead the program. She suggests that you bring good "learning" yarn and two circular needles in a size suitable for the yarn. Worsted weight plain yarn in a light color and 24" needles in size 7, 8, or 9 would work well. (I won’t be able to attend – boo hoo – because I’m leaving for Stitches on Wed.)

At our September meeting, Lauri Katz led us in a discussion – and practice – of reversible stitches, which are those that look the same on both sides (public and private) of an item. These kinds of stitches are especially useful – and attractive – on scarves, shawls, and afghans. Among the reversible stitches we discussed are garter stitch (knit every row), ribs of K1,P1 or K2,P2, and “mistake rib”. Mistake rib is done with a multiple of 4 stitches plus 3 (e.g., 27 stitches for a scarf); each row is composed of K2, P2, K2, P2, . . . ending K2, P1. I tried it and I like it!

For the theme for our INKnitters projects and article, we have decided to do reversible stitches. Our special original design will be an afghan composed of squares of different reversible stitches. All of us who participate will make squares for the afghan. We have yet to decide on type of yarn, colors, etc. We will also make our own individual items.

Don’t forget the Knit Out on September 21st. See you there!

RETREAT:
Plans are firming up for our beach retreat to be held on Friday, November
November 7th to Sunday, November 9th. The cost will be $80 per person. To reserve your place, send me an e-mail with your intent (msegal@socy.umd.edu) and send me a check for the $80 by September 15. If you don’t have my address (it’s on the membership roster), just send me an e-mail and I’ll give you my address. This cost will cover lodging for Friday and Saturday nights, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch and dinner on Saturday (catered at Mary Stevens’ house in Rehoboth), and snacks and beverages during each day. Dinner on Friday will be at the Cottage Café, which is on the Ocean Highway (Rte. 1) right across from Sea Colony. My apartment is in Island House at Sea Colony. There is room for 8 at the Fenwick Island house of a colleague of mine; there will be no charge there for cleaning, but we have to leave it clean.

The plan is to arrive on Friday and gather at my apartment. Friday night we'll go to the Cottage Cafe for dinner and then hang out at my apartment. (At some point, those of us staying in Fenwick can go there.) Saturday we'll go over to Mary Stevens' house in Rehoboth. We'll have lunch and dinner catered there (lunch will be cold salads; dinner will be shrimp, chicken, brown rice, vegetable, and dessert). Knitty Gritty is a yarn shop in Rehoboth that some might want to visit. Sunday we can visit Sea Needles - a wonderful shop in Bethany; it’s open from 11 A.M to 4 P.M. on Sunday. (Let’s see, eat lunch or go to Sea Needles, decisions, decisions. . . !)

If you sign up and pay for the retreat, I’ll send you all the details – addresses, directions, etc. You must be a paid-up member of Maryland Metro Knitters to attend (dues are $15 and will cover you through December, if you haven’t yet paid).

Happy Knitting until I see you again!
