July August Newsletter

Maryland Metro Knitters Guild Newsletter July-August 2003

President’s Column

Don’t forget that our new website is: www.mdmetroknitters.blogspot.com

Our July meeting program was a lesson in steeks. Thank you, Christine Estacion, for doing this program, including the excellent handout and lugging your sewing machine to the meeting. Now perhaps we won’t be afraid to cut our knitting!

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at our new location:
the First United Methodist Church, 6201 Belcrest Road, Hyattsville – across the street from the Prince Georges Plaza Metro Station. The phone number is 301-927-6133. Genia will post directions on our website. We will have the room from 7:00 to 9:30 so you can come early and stay late! Our meeting will begin at 7:30.

Our program for the August meeting is charity knitting. Please bring whatever projects you have completed or are working on. Also, bring patterns for charity knitting. Even if you aren’t currently doing a charity project, you can start one at the meeting. Just bring yarn and needles. We especially request that you knit items to donate to children in Russian orphanages.

Maryland Metro Knitters long-time member Kathy Graziani and her husband have two adopted sons from Russia, Boris and Victor. Boris is 16 and Victor is 12; they’ve been in the family for 6-7 years (6 for Boris and 7 for Victor). The family was planning a trip this summer to visit the orphanage from which the boys were adopted. Unfortunately, due to the time required for visas, they have had to cancel their trip for this summer. However, Kathy will be collecting knitted items and will send them to Children in Common, who will get them to the children who need them most. This organization has an annual trip, which usually leaves in October or November, so the clothes will be there for winter. Kathy will bring information about the group to our meeting.

Items needed are anything warm: knitted or crocheted sweaters, hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves. They should be at least 75% wool. There are no washing machines, so the items do not have to be machine washable. Items should be at least size 2. Please bring all the items to the meeting and we will take photos to send to Cast On magazine showing the good work our guild has done for such a worthwhile cause.

I personally used Kathy's request for donated knitted items as an opportunity to make a child's size 6 sweater out of a particular wool yarn that I love to work on, but usually don't make for children because of the care these fibers require.

I look forward to seeing you all on August 6th.

Happy summer knitting,
Mady
